I think I've had a fairly good experience overall, although there are areas for improvment in the status information from both Walsh Western and DELL.

I ordered an XPS L702z through the DELL Outlet on Mon 31st Oct. As part of the order I was able to specify a different address for delivery (work) from the invoice address of my payment card (home). It's a small link (easy to miss), but it is there and it works.

The first area I would say needs improving is by DELL themselves. From ordering, it took 4 working days for DELL to produce an invoice confirming payment, despite paying by card online. That's just pitifully bad in this day and age.

As an outlet machine, the machine was obviously pre-configured. So my second beef is with why DELL had the status sitting on "In production" for that same four day gap.

Strangely, the shipping status changed to "Departed Manu.Facility" on the 3rd of Nov, a day before the invoice was sent.

Anyway, the Walsh Western tracking then took 30 hours to add the next status change, which was a completely useless "Note: Plan Committed". This was Friday night.

The following Monday (7th) the status changed suddenly to add 4 simultaneous events (in then back out of the Hinkley hub).

Finally, on the 8th, the status indicated it was out on the van for delivery.

Date Time Location Activity
08/11/11 09:26 [signatory] DELIVERED
08/11/11 06:13 BPO - NOTTINGHAM ORDER ON DELIVERY.
08/11/11 03:23 BPO - NOTTINGHAM ORDER COMPLETE IN DEPOT.
08/11/11 03:23 BPO - NOTTINGHAM FIRST BOX SCANNED INTO HUB.
07/11/11 14:59 WWI - HINCKLEY ORDER DISPATCHED FROM HUB.
07/11/11 14:59 WWI - HINCKLEY FIRST BOX SCANNED OUT OF HUB.
07/11/11 14:59 WWI - HINCKLEY ORDER COMPLETE IN HUB.
07/11/11 14:59 WWI - HINCKLEY FIRST BOX SCANNED INTO HUB.
04/11/11 22:51 PLAN COMMITTED NOTE.
03/11/11 17:00 EMF DEPARTED MANU.FACILITY

The good points:
- The laptop arrived in perfect condition and working order.
- I saved a huge amount of money by using the Outlet compared to the normal "configure it" pages.
- I was able to specify a different delivery address from the invoice address, so no time off work required and no excuse for cards being left.

The bad points:
- Status updates are irregular and not always indicative of anything helpful to us punters who have coughed up a shed-load of money.

Overall rating, I'd say 4 out of 5 for DELL value, 3 out of 5 for unhelpful status (but better than none).

Final comment:
Compared to the excellent status updates available other suppliers such as scan.co.uk, who will even text your mobile with updates, DELL and WW both need to seriously rethink their status tracking capabilities.

Hey guys,

After reading a lot of posts, mainly from the start, my face shot red and i thought.. what have i got myself into.

ETA stated 01/01/11. I was on the defensive from day one, i knew if i rang them up i would be attacking their every responce without even listening. 01/11/11 came, i checked walsh western, and it stated 31/10/11 that it arrived with walsh western. More and more text appeared as the day progressed and by 11am, my laptop was delivered. My house is hard to find as well, no taxi can ever find my address.

The point of my post is do not trust messages from 3 years ago, this thread should be cleaned to only the last 6-12 months. Never judge a company on what they were doing 3 years ago. A lot of recent responses are positive. Its quite rare to see positive responces on forums, but, i thought it was only fair of me to give my feedback.

Well I have made an order with dell and hope that it doesn't take months. ATM it is saying ETA of around 10/11/2011 but I don't really trust this and am now considering giving my self a few months extra of waiting time for my delivery. Status is : in production

I ordered a dell xps last Saturday and was due to come today 31/10/11 then I had an email saying it was delayed a day further then another email saying its know being delivered on the original date. Only problem is it hasn't turned up, welsh western tracking site said some one came at 16:35 and no one was home.....there was three of us home....Card had been left to rearrange....no card to be found. Dell outlet customer service are a bunch of monkeys as they don't even respond to any of my emails. Does any one have any tips on how to get my order, can I just go to the depot and pick it up?
